Spinal injuries can leave victims with a life filled with rehabilitation and physical therapy, and the victim may never be able to fully recover. According to a recent article from Taunton Gazette, one doctor who had previously worked to create a spinal cord injury fund in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is now asking state legislators to fix a problem with the fund that caused it to run dry.

surgeonsThe fund was meant to get money from traffic fines levied on repeat traffic offenders who were losing their driving licenses. After the bill was signed into law to create and fund the charitable organization, there was a change in the general traffic laws. The change caused people to lose their licenses much earlier in the process, so the funds were not being paid at the right time. As a result of what they are calling a “scrivener’s error,” the spinal injury fund lost $300,000 in funding that had been previously earmarked for it. Continue reading

According to a recent feature from Time, a new report has found a connection between traumatic brain injury (TBI) and energy drinks in teens. The report writers surveyed teen brain injury victims to see if they had reported drinking large amounts of energy drinks in their respective daily lives prior to suffering the TBI. They found an alarmingly high number of victims had been drinking the energy drinks.

redbullAs a control, they also asked teens of the same age who had not suffered a traumatic brain injury and the percentage of teens who had not consumed energy drinks was considerably and significantly lower. In trying to prove causation, there has been difficulty finding why chemically and biologically this would be occurring, but the survey results clearly indicate some level of relationship. These days, remote controlled unmanned aircraft, known as “drones,” are appearing in the headlines on a regular basis. In some cases, we are talking about large military drones, such as the infamous Predator, and how they are used for surveillance and military strikes in the Middle East. These are very large drones with wingspans of nearly 50 feet, and each one costs over $4 million. They can fly virtually silently and launch Hellfire missiles with extreme precision.

rq-1-predator-1532872However, these are not the same kind of drones making headlines and stirring up controversy in the United States. In this case, we are talking about the small battery operated helicopters with four rotors that you get at BestBuy for around $1,500. The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) does not regulate these drones because they do not carry passengers and are not used for commercial purposes. If they were to be used for commercial purposes, the FAA would have oversight, and the agency currently prohibits their use. We have even seen cases were reporters were trying to use them for news footage since they normally contain cameras, but this was deemed commercial use and prohibited. Amazon also tried to use them to deliver packages, but this is not yet allowed, though there may be some changes in the future. Continue reading

In recent years, we have seen a great deal of media coverage about people across the country who are against the use of vaccines and having their children vaccinated. Much of this fear of vaccines is believed to have been advanced by a small group of celebrities who been outspoken about the issue. Jenny McCarthy was one of the most notable celebrities associated with the anti-vaccine movement when she implied vaccines could be responsible for causing autism in children.

syringeandbottleEssentially, all doctors and public health groups are strong proponents of vaccines for adults and especially children. They say there is absolutely no scientific evidence vaccines are responsible for autism or any other heath condition claimed by those not in favor of vaccines. These doctors feel it is tragic to allow any child to get a disease that could have prevented with a simple vaccine.   Continue reading

McIlwain v. Natchez Community Hospital, Inc., an appeal from the Supreme Court of Mississippi, involved a father who took his two-year-old child to defendant’s hospital emergency room because his son was crying, vomiting, and saying he was in pain.   When they arrived at defendant’s hospital, they were seen by a doctor who knew the boy’s father, because doctor had worked with the child’s paternal grandmother, who was a former nurse.

brain copyThe doctor was aware the boy had suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage in the past as result of being in a serious car accident. The subarachnoid cavity is located just beneath the top of a person’s skull. At the emergency room that night, the boy’s father told his doctor about the vomiting and complaints of pain, but did not mention the subarachnoid hemorrhage, since he believed doctor was already aware of this previous car accident. Around one year after the case was filed and three years before trial, defendants made an offer of judgment for $50,001 to one plaintiff and $70,001 to the other plaintiff, pursuant to relevant state law.   Both plaintiffs rejected their respective judgment offers and decided to proceed to trial.
