Those who followed the United States Open tennis tournament are probably aware that tennis star Eugenie Bouchard was injured in an alleged slip and fall incident in the trainer’s room at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Billie Jean King National Tennis Center (NTC) in Flushing, New York.

tennis-fun-2-1398396She recently filed a lawsuit in federal court in New York against the USTA, in which she alleges the organization had allowed a foreign substance to accumulate on the floor of the trainer’s room at the NTC, and this caused her to slip and fall, which resulted in a serious head injury. Specifically, her complaint alleges that following a match in the evening, she went to the trainer’s room inside the female locker room, where she slipped on the then-unknown substance and was seriously injured. Most parents put a lot of thought into choosing a daycare facility. Sometimes that means asking neighbors for recommendations and then personally inspecting the facility to make sure it is clean and safe. Parents will ask a lot of questions of the daycare provider’s manager or owner about how long the staff have worked there and how much training they have received. This is because a daycare facility that has been open for many years and has workers that have been for there for a long time gives a sense of confidence, and this is important. While this may seem crazy to people who do not have kids, there is nothing more nerve-racking than leaving your child at daycare for the first time.

There are many things in a home that can injure children. Some are well known, and parents will take certain standard measures to prevent these household hazards from injuring their children. One obvious example is an electrical outlet, which parents typically protect with plastic safety inserts. Household chemicals can also be dangerous, especially when they are kept under the kitchen sink at height easily accessible to children.   To prevent children from getting poisoned or otherwise injured as a result of these chemicals being stored in the home, parents will typically place child safety latches on cabinets to prevent children from gaining access.

According to a recent news article from The Star, big screen televisions can pose a significant risk to small children (especially toddlers), depending on how the television is sitting in a room. Actor and comedian Tracy Morgan will be hosting Saturday Night Live soon, and, as part of a promo for the upcoming show, Morgan can be seen with fellow cast members joking about the fact that he is still recovering from a traumatic brain injury (TBI) he recently suffered and for which he is still recovering.   Morgan was involved in a serious car accident that left him in a coma for eight days. Morgan said when he finally woke up and was told he had been in a serious car accident, he was just thrilled to learn the accident was not his fault. This type of joke at his own expense is very much in the style of his standup comedy.

774605_car_accident_2Morgan’s car accident occurred in the summer of 2014 and left him with several broken bones as well as head trauma, which resulted in the traumatic brain injury.   He was riding in his limo at the time of the accident when a truck hit them from behind, causing the car crash. According to a recent news article from the West Virginia Record, a woman slipped and fell inside a Wal-Mart store and is alleging negligence in connection with her premises liability case against the big box retailer.

She said the store management was negligent in allowing the substance to accumulate on the floor in June of 2013. She claims the liquid caused her slip and fall in manner that resulted in substantial physical pain and suffering. Continue reading

According to a recent news report from CBS Sports, Montreal Canadien’s forward Zack Kassian was in a car accident where he suffered serious injuries. He was sent to the hospital following the accident and is now under the care of the team’s medical staff.

921217_crashed_carWitnesses say Kassian was riding in the car as a passenger, along with a 20-year-old female driver and an 18-year-old passenger, when the accident occurred. One witness took a photograph of the vehicle, which had apparently crashed into a tree.   Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the accident and have said they will release more information when it becomes available. According to a recent news article from the UCLA Newsroom, a new study has shown that eating high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) can actually hamper a victim’s recovery from traumatic brain injury (TBI).   The study was done using laboratory rats that had suffered traumatic brain injury. According to a recent news report from the Washington Post, a third grade student in Baltimore suffered a serious head injury after a fall that occurred in his elementary school. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident but say he reported becoming ill shortly before he suffered a fractured skull. It is not even known how or why he fell.

photo_emerging_TBIIt is believed the nine-year-old boy was in the hallway of his school around 1 p.m. when the fall occurred. School officials reported that they found him lying on the floor and called his mother. They told his mother that they were calling an ambulance, and she went to the school to be with her son.   When she arrived, she found her son sitting in a chair with his head slumped over, and he was non-responsive. Rapper Rick Ross is in the news again with more legal trouble. This time his trouble is not related to criminal charges filed against him for assault and kidnapping involving an alleged pistol whipping incident. According to recent news report form Gossip Extra, Ross and his mother are being sued as co-defendants for an alleged slip and fall injury that occurred in his mother’s Florida home.

952313_gavelThe plaintiff said the injury occurred in 2011, and he is now filing a lawsuit because of the claimed tremendous pain he suffered when he tripped on the rail of an iron gate on the property. There is no mention as of yet for why plaintiff waited so long to file his claim and whether there are any issues with the statute of limitations. Continue reading

In Boston and the surrounding area, Dunkin’ Donuts is a very popular place to get a cup of coffee. Much like Starbucks in the rest the country, it seems like there is a Dunkin’s Donuts on just about every other block. According to a recent news article from CNBC, one woman sued the donutmaker after suffering a serious injury at one of their stores and settled the case for around half a million dollars.

The plaintiff claimed she was carrying a tray of hot coffee when she tripped on a parking spot barrier that was not in its proper place outside the store. The re-bar spike was sticking up dangerously and was the reason she fell. Continue reading
