Traveling by bus is generally pretty safe. Millions of people do it without issue each year, and we know on the whole it’s safer than being in a car. Still, bus crashes do still happen and when they do, they tend to be catastrophic. That’s what reportedly happened recently in North Carolina.

According to NBC, a bus carrying a college football team crashed on a highway there. As of this writing, as least four are dead and 42 others are injured.  The bus driver is one of those who were killed in this fatal bus accident, as was the 10-year-old son of one of the coaches.

1198014_motorwayThis bus was transporting the football team from Clinton College in Rock Hill, South Carolina to University of God’s Chosen in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Authorities have said that while the bus was traveling at normal speeds, the driver lost control, and it veered into the median of the divided highway and crashed. Continue reading

According to a recent news feature form FierceBiotech, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have just agreed to provide $3 million to a biotech firm that is developing portable brain monitoring system.  The lab opened three years ago and is working on products that are portable and will be able to scan for signs of traumatic brain injury (TBI), dementia, and a type of stroke known as acute ischemic stroke.

doctor5The technology was originally being developed by UCLA, and the biotech company licensed the rights to it and is working to design a line of commercial models for sales to various consumers. While the wearable device is already in working order, before the company can market it, they must complete a series of clinical trials, and this grant will allow them to get those studies underway. When someone suffers a head injury, including a closed head injury which involves no noticeable bleeding, it often results in a pooling of blood between the brain and dura.  This pooling of blood, or even a bruise to the brain, results in the buildup of pressure that can cut of the flow of the blood to the brain.

skull-1415989In an effort to alleviate the pressure, doctors will sometimes choose to remove a section of the patient’s skull.  The procedure is known as a craniectomy.  While there is evidence that doing a craniectomy will prevent a patient from dying the hospital soon after arrival, according to a recent news feature from WebMD, the procedure may be leaving patients alive, but with permanent and extensive brain damage. In Parr v. Rosenthal, a case from the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, the plaintiffs had filed a medical malpractice case against the defendants in the Superior Court.   In the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, The Supreme Judicial Court (SJC) is our state supreme court and the Superior Court is our highest level trial court.

reflex-hammer-1421540In this case, plaintiff was born in 1994 with a large lump on his right calf.  His parents took him to Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in downtown Boston to have this lump examined. After being examined, doctors referred the child to what they call the sarcoma group to have the lumped imaged and a biopsy taken. Continue reading

In Baptist Ventures, Inc. v. Hoke, a personal injury appeal for the Supreme Court of Alabama, plaintiff was allegedly injured as a result of medical treatment she received from the defendants.  The defendants in this case run an Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) medical practice. Plaintiff was a patient of defendants.

nursesIn April 2011, plaintiff went to defendants’ medical clinic to have a procedure performed.  One day prior to the two-year anniversary of this doctor’s visit, the plaintiff filed a medical malpractice lawsuit claiming that the defendants had provided care that fell below the acceptable standard of due care, and as a result of the breach of the duty of care, she was injured. A recent news feature from the New York Times takes a look the number of reported head injuries as a result of stroller accidents and how those numbers are on the rise. National reporting statistics show that on average, 50 children each day will be seen in the emergency room because of a head injury suffered while in a baby carrier or stroller.

brains-1426619While this is bad enough on its own, it now seems that a far greater percentage of these children are suffering from a traumatic brain injury than previously believed. These new numbers came from the National Injury Surveillance System.  It should be noted that in the context of scientific research, surveillance means looking at various types of records rather than taking an actual roll in the events or treatment while they are happening.  A surveillance study can happen years later because there is no interaction required by the researchers. In Carter v. Reese, a truck driver was pulling this semi tractor-trailer into a loading dock at a contractor’s location.  He was supposed to drop off his empty trailer and pick up a new trailer.  He had attached the new trailer to his truck and was then trying to jump onto the loading dock so he could close the door on the trailer.  He could not do this until he pulled the truck way from the loading dock, as the door was open and the trailer was flush to the distribution center.

wheelchair5When he was trying to get on the loading dock to close the trailer door, he slipped and his leg fell between the trailer and the loading dock.  He was not in any pain, according to his testimony, but he was trapped between the truck and the loading dock, and he began to bang on the trailer and yell for help.  It took about ten minutes for someone to hear him. Benda v. Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City, a case from the Supreme Court of Utah, involves a 14-year-old student who was injured while working as part of the set crew on a play performed by the school’s drama department. The drama teacher told the student to climb a lift so that a light bulb could be changed.

machine-1517155Once the student was in the lift, the teacher raised to into position, which was about 30 feet in the air. After the first bulb was changed, the teacher instructed other students on the ground to move the lift so the student on top could change another light bulb. At this point, the lift fell over and the student suffered serious and life-threatening injuries as a result of the fall from a serious height. Continue reading

No matter how well the visit to a prospective daycare facility goes, or how well trained the staff members seem to be, there is still some degree of anxiety experienced by most parents when they drop their child those first few times.

266401_taking_a_strollAccording to a recent news feature from NBC, a mother is questioning how her 2-year-old child was injured after an alleged fall accident at his daycare facility.  She is claiming that her child suffered a serous personal injury to his mouth as a result as result of this fall.
