According to a recent news story article from ABC News, a high school football player at a California school suffered a serious head injury during a game. He is currently in a medically induced coma, so doctors can perform multiple surgeries to suppress the bleeding and swelling and work to his life.

Witnesses say the play during which the student was hurt seemed like a routine tackle – nobody was sure how he was injured so badly. According to a recent news article from the UCLA Newsroom, a new study has shown that eating high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) can actually hamper a victim’s recovery from traumatic brain injury (TBI).   The study was done using laboratory rats that had suffered traumatic brain injury. According to a recent news report form the Worcester Telegram, a 55-year-old proprietor of his family-owned fruit stand in Paxton succumbed to injuries suffered earlier in September in a fall accident.

pumpkin-patch-1562467Witnesses say deceased man and one of his employees were unloading a huge bin of pumpkins they had taken to the stand by truck when the accident occurred. The men were standing on either side of the trailer trying to move when the man fell about four feet to the ground and landed on his head. A family member who was there when the tragic accident occurred had worked in the medical field and knew when victim was mumbling and said he felt like he was going to vomit that he had suffered a brain injury. By the time paramedics got him into an ambulance, he had fallen into a coma. The following day, doctors determined victim was brain dead and notified the family. Continue reading

According to a recent feature from Time, a new report has found a connection between traumatic brain injury (TBI) and energy drinks in teens. The report writers surveyed teen brain injury victims to see if they had reported drinking large amounts of energy drinks in their respective daily lives prior to suffering the TBI. They found an alarmingly high number of victims had been drinking the energy drinks.

redbullAs a control, they also asked teens of the same age who had not suffered a traumatic brain injury and the percentage of teens who had not consumed energy drinks was considerably and significantly lower. In trying to prove causation, there has been difficulty finding why chemically and biologically this would be occurring, but the survey results clearly indicate some level of relationship. A traumatic brain injury can leave a victim with unimaginable consequences. A person who was once an intelligent and outgoing individual with a bright future may be left unable to perform even the most basic tasks learned during childhood.
