New Boston Playground Highlights Injury-Prevention Requirements

Mayor Thomas M. Menino recently joined Liberty Mutual Insurance Chairman and CEO David H. Long for a ribbon cutting ceremony to unveil the City of Boston’s first universally accessible playground at the Charlestown Navy Yard. According to the City of Boston, this project will help to provide close to 25,000 square foot boardwalk with nearly 65 pieces of play equipment within a nearly 20,000 square foot rubber playground area.

This is going to be the first playground in the area that caters to both children and adults. Liberty Mutual stepped up with a $1 million donation.

10 Hospitalized in Elementary School Bus Accident

Ten elementary school children were transported to the hospital after a recent school bus accident on Thomas Landers Road, just a block away from their school.

According to CBS Boston, the accident happened at roughly 9:00 a.m. when a box truck drive into the lane of the school bus. The driver of the bus had to swerve to avoid a collision, but ended up leaving the road and slamming into a utility pole. The electrical wires wound up lying all over the road. Luckily, the bus driver was able to keep all of the kids on the bus until emergency response arrived on scene.

Red Bull Facing $85 Million Wrongful Death Lawsuit

Red Bull has been increasingly scrutinized and was the target of investigation after several injuries and fatalities linked to the energy drink. An $85 million dollar lawsuit was filed this month against Red Bull after a man suffered a heart attack and died soon after consuming the product. This is the first wrongful death claim filed for a Red Bull death. As there have been hundreds of ER cases and other suspicious injuries involving the product, the company is also being investigated by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA). Public health advocates are also concerned about the potential risks faced by consumers.

Pedestrian Seriously Injured in 3-Car Accident on Sidewalk

In a recent downtown Boston accident, a pedestrian was seriously injured. According to 7NEWS, it happened at the intersection of Stuart and Berkeley Streets. The pedestrian was on the sidewalk when the accident happened. Officials report that it was the result of a chain reaction-type accident involving three vehicles. The pedestrian was transported to Mass General Hospital.

Though the number of pedestrian fatalities fell from 5,585 in 1995 to 4,280 in 2010, there were an estimated 70,000 reported pedestrian injuries in 2010. While the decline is uplifting, it may be an illusion. Officials believe that hospital records aren’t even the tip of the iceberg when it comes to pedestrian accidents, injuries and fatalities as many are never even reported to the police.

Studies Reveal Transvaginal Mesh Both Unsafe and Ineffective

While the number of lawsuits involving transvaginal mesh is on the rise, new research indicates that the use of mesh product offers no variation in cure rates.
