Collisions with Animals

Car collisions with animals are typically though to occur with wildlife. While this is true, and more common, collisions with stray animals are also common. Therefore, it is important for a driver to be aware of his surroundings, especially in a residential neighborhood. When a car collides with a domestic animal, questions of liability arise. This is especially so if both the animal and the vehicle are injured.

If the animal is a pet, the owner of the pet may actually be deemed liable for any harm caused to the driver. This is because the owner should have kept the animal leashed or restrained to prevent public harm or accidents. With this liability the owner would have to pay for the driver’s expenses out of pocket. Sometimes homeowner’s insurance may cover such a claim.
