A couple of weeks ago, it was reported that a United States Secret Service advance team was in the New England area preparing for an upcoming visit from presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton when their vehicle was hit by another driver in a head-on collision. Basically, everyone involved in the accident was seriously injured, and one person was killed.
Among the injured was a Secret Service agent who was left paralyzed following the tragic accident. According to a recent news feature from CBS Boston, his fiancé got a call at her Boston home from the 30-year-old agent himself, and he told her that she was the best thing that ever happened to him. He also told her that he can’t feel his legs and that she needed to come get him as soon as possible.
She rushed to the hospital where he was being treated, and, when she first saw him, the first thing he said was that they will get through this. Doctors say that he suffered a serious spinal cord injury, and when the accident first occurred, he could not feel anything below his shoulders. However, he is showing signs of improvement every day and is gaining more feeling over time. He can move his right arm, and this is causing a lot of hope that he will one day be able to walk again. It will be necessary for him to undergo a great deal of occupational therapy and other types of rehabilitation, and he is being transported to rehab facility in Boston to work on this.
Regardless of the cause, a spinal cord injury can be devastating to victims and their families. Depending on where on the column the damage occurred, a person may be left a paraplegic or quadriplegic. There person may be wheelchair bound and may need assistance with breathing. The victim may need medical devices, such as a colostomy bag, and may need constant help from family members and professional healthcare aids for the rest of his or her life.
This is not only the cause of a lot of pain and suffering, but it may also cause a great deal of medical expenses and lost wages, as well as loss of consortium, which is a separate claim your spouse can file. If you have suffered a spinal cord injury as a result of someone else’s negligence, you should speak with an experienced personal injury attorney in Boston as soon as possible to help receive a full and appropriate financial recovery.
While you may never fully recover from the total extent of your injuries, having been compensated financially will make things somewhat easier on you and you family. Many people do not realize that not only is the victim prevented from working and earning a living, but family members may also have to leave their jobs or cut back on hours to help care for the victim. Having money to compensate them for this loss is very helpful. As of now, people who have read about the case have set a fundraising page on a community funding site.
